My Thoughts
As Inspired by THE HOLY SPIRIT

Charlie Kirk and My Hope in Jesus

It’s been a week since Charlie Kirk was shot dead, and my emotions are still raw. I have been on a roller coaster of highs--Look, Jesus is already bringing good from this evil—and lows--evil is winning—which is pretty much how my journal entry reads from that first evening:

It’s late, but I can’t sleep. Charlie Kirk was assassinated today. My heart hurts and I feel physically and spiritually sick. Why God? Father. Charlie loved You and Jesus. He loved his family and the United States of America. He wanted everyone to know You and the truth. But then, Jesus was assassinated, too. Nearly 2000 years ago. Ouch. We need You and Jesus and the Holy Spirit and Mother Mary and St. Joseph and all the saints and angels now. In 2025. I’m trying hard not to cry, to worry, to doubt. I’m trying to remember that You will bring good from all things for those of us who love You. I love You. Charlie loved You. His family loves You. I trust You and will try my best to be patient and not scared. To trust You and Your providence for us.

Despite my strong faith, I have been on a search for understanding, answers, insight, and hope. I have gone to Mass and received the Eucharist. I have gone to confession and received absolution for my sins. I’ve sat in Adoration, listened to Christian podcasts, read spiritual works, prayed, meditated, watched too much news coverage, posted to Instagram, and scrolled the posts of others. Some of my efforts have blessed me with graces, consolation and peace. Others have only served to foment my anxiety and thoughts of defeat.

Today I was reminded that my focus—our focus—should not be on the evil that took place on that college campus in Utah. Or the evil perpetrated in Minneapolis, Colorado, Charlotte, Ukraine, Uganda, or the Middle East. To stress—and stress over—the evil tempts us to think we are fighting alone, that all is lost, and we are doomed beyond all salvation.

Our focus and our hope must be on Jesus Christ. On the One who has already won the battle and defeated evil for us.

No, we cannot dismiss or forget what has taken place, and we must not sit idly by while lies are spread unchecked. There is much work to be done. We have been called to communicate the absolute, irrefutable Truth of Jesus Christ. To share the beauty, truth, and goodness of our faith in and redemption by the One who died on the Cross and rose from the dead for us.

We are in a spiritual battle, and our weapons are the Bible, the Crucifix, the Rosary, and prayer. Like Charlie, our weapons are our words and, specifically, the Word of God Made Flesh—Jesus Christ.

Do you believe in Jesus? Do you know Him?  Whatever your level of faith, if you want someone to introduce you to Jesus or guide you closer to Him, I will. Don’t wait, and do not be afraid. Comment here or send me a message.

With love in Jesus Christ,
Carolyn
